We discussed about how to write a paper with a presentation of professor lee. The presentation explained not only purpose and structure of paper but also few misconceptions which students likely have. So I tried to evaluate my current ideas about my final research using what I learned from the presentation.
First of all, it highlighted that paper should demonstrate the idea it self not the design idea of prototype. I think that I also focused too much about prototype and final outcome of the design. As my topic is related to data visualization, I was also thinking too much about how final outcome should be look like at very early time. Rather this concern, I have to more think about why choose data visualization as a subject, and which aspect of current data visualization do I want to improve. My motivation of the research come from my previous data journalism project called "Project Syria". I believe that one of the role in data journalism is addressing social crisis, and especially "Project Syria" is aimed to show what affect migrant crisis. So I thought that I can merely answer the first question, however it is still hard to find which part and how can I improved current data visualization. My advisor professor Lee Tony also mentioned that I need to find what "Project Syria" contributed in design area.
Secondly, the presentation explained that ultimate purpose of the paper is not describe project but communicating my idea or argument to the audiences. Again, I thought about what is my argument. In the project, I thought that data journalism project should address the problem and to do this, it should show which factor affect the result of crisis. However, as I'm a designer, I have to set the more detail problem in the final research. Few possible options in my thoughts, but they are not still unclear. I might suggest new type of visualization to show factor of crisis to let people talk about not only symptom but also reason of the social crisis.
Although, paper is an academic outcome, it should utilise storytelling in order to help audience understand my idea. I have to think about this aspect after when previous issues are solved.

Early Semester
There are several changes in Mdes program while I was suspending my study last year. First of all, students already proceeded their final researches since 2nd semester and professors involved in Mdes program were also changed. Getting start with the last semester, all of these changes make me feel strange and adopting new environment is little bit challenging for me. However, I also get excited that I can bring my ideas and capabilities which I earned from various experiences during last year as I participated .
Exploring Topics
My first task is to decide research topic and main advisor. I asked professor Tony Lee who has a lot of industrial experience in UX design area to be advisor of my research. As I was fascinated by few technologies such as augmented reality, context awareness and data visualization. The reason why I have a lot of interesting in the technologies is that I want to position myself for designer who has strength in prototyping. Professor Lee told me that it's a good motivation, however I should know what happening about those technologies in industrial and academic area and also find several phenomenons to framing problems. Therefore, I started collected other theses ,case studies and projects related to those technologies and organised them. Below image shows the collection of works related to "contextual experience".
Most of works provide me comprehensive understanding of context awareness technologies and context design, however, professor Lee told me framing problems required more than just collecting theses so I need to observe many aspects related to those subject in real world and find any problems or possibilities of improvement. He also highlighted that finding and framing problems which other cannot discover is one of the most important abilities of designer.
Challenges in framing problems
There were several challenges in framing problems for the research when it comes with the technologies that I mentioned. First of all, many academic organisation and companies already conducted research in those area, so it looks like hard to have originality of my research. And second challenge is measuring problem in those area. There are many usage of "contextual experience" in various area such as smart home, location based service and information provider. However, most context awareness service are location based services so they have too simple interaction to raise any problems and more advanced context awareness services are mostly depend on their core technologies which decide weather certain function is available or not. Therefore, despite of time that spent for seeking design problems in "Contextual Experience" area, I decide to find other research subject.
Bring Previous Project to Research
As I was slow starter in last semester comparing other student, I was worried about deciding topic because of time limit. I share this problem my friend and previous co-workers. They told me that how about highlight your most strength which developed recently, and mentioned about my last data journalism project called "Project Syria" which I completed a month ago. It was data journalism project showing people how Syrian Crisis are serious and which factors have influence on it. This project include not only data design process but also research about the Syria crisis itself. Below image is one of the page of project. It shows which factor affect number of death and refugees.
So I asked my advisor professor Lee, weather it is possible to bring my project to the research. He told me that it was ok, however I need to find how this project contribute to design area, for example suggesting new method for data visualisation or extending role of design area. I started to looking back the whole process of this project find answer of this question.
Meaning of the Project
Initial motivation of the project was "let people know the situation" then we found more motivation "let people know why the situation happen". Therefore, I think that value of this project is on "why", because we tried to visualize "why" this happened. One of role of data journalism is deliver story of social problem by using data driven way. There were another example of data journalism project about Social Crisis. Below is the example of them
They usually collect crowd sourcing data to visualize the crisis. They are about Ebola disease, Gaza military conflict and Iraq disarray. However, they just show the crisis as phenomenon and didn't show the which factor might affect on crisis.
From Social Challenge to Design Challenge
Through the project, we would like to show people which factor affect on the number of death and refugee, because we believe that showing these factor can encourage people to raise right question. In case of Syria Crisis, most media highlight how many people killed and how many refugees moved to Europe, rather which factor threat them and how much level of the treat. However, I thought that letting people know factor of crisis to address the problem is social challenge. As I'm a designer, I need to break down this challenge to design challenge.
During the project we already analysis 6 factors of civilian attack which possibly killed people and force them to leave. However, I was thinking weather we need to use traditional primitive visualization to describe those data. So I started to think about suggesting new type of data visualization which was optimised to show timeline of crisis.
Framing problem again in the design challenge
I feel that I need to more organise my thought about the previous process. I believe that suggesting new type of visualiztion could be the topic of design research. However, to transform these idea into research format, I need to more organise thought on it. I need to establish more clear reason and purpose why new type of data visualization is needed and how can I develop it.

2016 May 24, Service Design Lecture by Park Jung Eun
We had a lecture about service design by Park Jung Eun, service designer who has a lot of experience in design industries. Not only theoretical content, but also her empirical experience in UK were main focus in the lecture. She spent almost 1year to develop 'home library', book delivery service for elder people in London. I was impressed that they care much about elder in the society and this area is also huge part of the market. My personal experience in Cardiff also reminds me that how much they care about elder people, because I saw many elder people have their job in markets or stores, which is hard to observe in my country.
What she highlighted during lecture was 'tacit knowledge'. She mentioned that tacit knowledge is obtained by interaction with individual customer rather than formal research. For example, each customer have different preference in type of books, and it can be obtained by previous history of their interaction. Then they know which kind of book each customer like and deliver them books likely they are willing to read. She also mentioned that service is not made by single process, it is rather keep developed by iteration progress.
During the QnA session, I ask some questions about my previous working experience as part time job. I conducted to service process for new coffee brand in Beijing and my main task was creating service journey map in the cafe. But they didn't provide me enough data and keep force me to just make it. Therefore, I completed the journey map using my imagination. So my question was how should I react in this kind of situation. She advised me that even that was not unusual situation, I should be more flexible, and tried to contact other researcher or find extra data even if my job was not field researcher.

Abstract practice
Inventing new type of data visualization for addressing long-term social phenomenon

Exploring Research Topic
Today was third class of 3rd semester. Personally, coming back to student life after finishing 1 year rest gave me not only freshness but also tense. One of the most difficult thing in starting this semester was determining my research topic. I believed that I was thinking enough about my main interest and my capability during the break, however when looking my idea through more professional perspective such as professor and other tutor, there were some defect and limitations that I never expected.
Therefore, I already changed main domain of my research topic, but today I finally decide main area of the research. I decided to bring my last project called "project Syria", data journalism project about Syria Crisis into final research. However, main tasks of conceptualising clear topic still remains. (http://projectsyria.witnessism.org)
Professor, Sung-Sick Lee, main advisor, gave me a feedback that you need to find what my project contribute to in design area. And Park Jun-eun, another tutor who came today class, gave me advice that you can also demonstrate how your project contributed to solve social issue, as this project uncovered fact that find in data analysis of Syrian based information source.
I will finally decide which aspect of this project have to be main process of the research in this week.
